Rules Updates
There
are only a few changes this year, most of which occur on the
forms. Please make sure you read the forms carefully.
The main changes are indicated below.
- Human
Subjects
- When
written parental permission is required for subjects under
18 and the project involves a survey, the survey must
be attached to the Informed Consent Form so the parents
can review it before signing.
- Potentially
Hazardous Biological Agents
-
Lab studies using MRSA and VRE are now
permitted but only in a BSL-2 lab in a Registered Research
Institution and under the supervision of a Qualified Scientist.
- Projects
involving the growth of mold on food are no longer considered
restricted IF the experiment is stopped
as soon as ANY mold is detected.
Otherwise, the project must be submitted to the SRC for
review (and approval) before the experiment is started,
and it must be conducted in a proper lab.
- Changes
on Forms
- Form
4 - Human Subjects Form
- Students
may no longer request a waiver of Informed Consent.
That determination is made by the reviewing SRC/IRB
committee.
- A sample
of an Informed Consent Form MUST be included with
EVERY project using human subjects. It is
recommended that students use the Informed Consent
Form from ISEF.
- Form
5B - Vertebrate Animal Form
- This
change applies only to projects which are conducted
in a research institution. The updated form
requires that the pain designation assigned to the
study by the institution IACUC be indicated on the
form. In addition, there must be a pain designation
for the student's portion of the experiment.
- A question
has been added to Form 5B asking for the origin
of any fresh tissue from the animal(s) involved
in the study.
- Form
6A - Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents Risk Assessment
Form
- There
is a new arrangement of the approval area on the
form, but the information is basically the same.

This
website was created by Dr. Jeff Seeman of the University of
Richmond and it's all about science projects. Dr. Seeman uses
interviews with students to talk about projects from start
to finish. One of the students interviewed is Suraj
Mishra, one of our Grand Prize Winners from 2009.
