Tips for Students:

The following are tips to help you put your paper together for submission to the Metro Richmond Science Fair.

  1. A title page is not necessary and is torn off before screening.  The title of the paper should be put on the top of the first page of the paper. Titles on the paper should match the title that was used for online registration as different titles can be confusing for those reading the papers.

  2. Junior Division students (grades 7 & 8) send in a total of 3 copies of the paper.

  3. Senior Division students send in 4 copies of the paper.

  4. An abstract of your project is necessary for online registration and for display at the Fair if you are accepted.  You don't have to send in a copy of the abstract with your paper in February, however.  The screeners will read your entire paper and won't need the abstract at this time.

  5. There should be NO NAMES, including student names or those of a parent, teacher or mentor, on anything except the forms.

  6. Since the parts of the paper are usually completed at separate times, they are often saved as separate documents on the computer.  When the paper is printed out for submission, all the parts should be merged into one document so that the “Introduction” is not 1/2 of a page with the “Procedure” starting another page, etc.  This looks unprofessional to the judges.

  7. Use only current Metro Richmond Science Fair forms.

  8. Team Projects: the team should submit only one copy of each of the forms with all students' names on the one form.  The only exception is Form 1B - Approval Form.  There should be a separate Form 1B for EACH student on the team.

  9. Don't forget the page maximums on the body of the paper. The page limits DO NOT include the Bibliography or the graphs/charts/pictures, etc. in the Appendix.

    Junior Division - 5 pages

    Senior Division - 7 pages

  10. If your teacher has approved your project for submission, go online to register at  Online Registration.

  11. Register and print out 2 copies of the Student Information Form which is your confirmation of registration. Keep 1 copy for your records and submit the other copy with your paper.

  12. Online registration will generate a Project Number. Write the project number in the upper left corner of each copy of your paper.

  13. Register your project one time only.
