National Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition in Alaska

Amanda Schanz, a freshman in the Math and Science High School at Clover Hill, entered her project in the 2009 Metro Richmond Science Fair in February, 2009.  She was selected by the panel of Screeners to present her project, The Effect of Estrogen Level in Water on the Average Root Length and Average Number of Roots of the Pothos Plant, at the MRSF in March.  Amanda went on to win 2nd Place in Botany as well as the opportunity to represent the MRSF at the Virginia State Science & Engineering Fair at George Mason University in April.

Amanda was awarded First Place in Plant Sciences at VSSEF.  In addition, she was selected as one of the winners of the VSSEF Stockholm Junior Water Prize, an award presented by the Water Environment Federation.   The WEF is an organization which has provided technical education and training for the world's water quality professionals since 1928.  Amanda subsequently registered her project with the state SJWP competition and was notified last spring that she was selected as Virginia's winner!

As the state winner, Amanda won an all-expense paid trip for herself and a teacher to the National Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition held in Anchorage, Alaska from June 25-27, 2009.  Amanda placed in the top eight across the nation and her work was published in the National SJWP Journal.

Congratulations to Amanda on her accomplishments!!
